Aloha Mai Kakou,

Seventeen years in the making and I still feel an incredible jolt of pride each and every year as we share in this unique experience, yet relatively unknown to many.  On behalf of E Pili Kakou and the Lauakea Foundation we would not have this genuine sense of pride if not for this great ‘ohana we have come to all know and for whom have shaped, formed, and established a purity of love and joy for the art of hula and the love for one another.  Because of all of YOU, E Pili Kakou thrives and breathes “ALOHA.”

To our Kaua’i halau organization under Kumu Hula La’amea Almeida and the Women of Ka Waikahe Lani Malie, you are the fostering parents of this event from its conception – you were there when it crawled.  You were there when it took its first steps.  And you are there even now, as it changes and matures.  Simply no words befitting when I see the faces that have withstood the test of time.  This is EPK to me.  Not the presenters, but you ladies!  We may have our faults each year.  But we never circum to what is beneath us in our belief and trust in each other.  For that, I am forever grateful.

To our QLCC Organization:  You fill the room with the youthful spirit that there is hope for our future and an optimism knowing we can succeed together for the betterment of our people.  I am always touched, by the “works” of ke akua when he brings beauty and youth to honor our queen and to honor our kupuna with such dignity and poise. Truly you are blessed in this way. Truly I am blessed to have you all each and every year!

To our volunteers and staff as a whole, giving of your self to a “cause” surely becomes a “cause” for us all.  It is my hope that each of you have gained something for your self and walked away with the reward knowing you  “matter,” and mean so much to our EPK Staff and the Lauakea Foundation.  I know we all deal with yearly quarrels, miss-communications, sometimes, uncomfortable decisions, and undesirable moments of having to swallow your pride and yield towards compassion.  We are human.  But when it comes to our work and commitment as a “body” we certainly have what it means to be “aloha” and to live “aloha.”  We have what it takes.  No one can take that away from us!

On behalf of Paddy Wailani Kauhane, Kumu La’amea Almeida, and myself, may you be blessed abundantly for your good deeds for surely god knows and recognizes your blessed heart!  We surely do!

The Beatrice M.H. Young Foundation and Douglas K.T. Ho

Hawaii born and bred Douglas Ho has been quietly helping non profit causes in Hawaii for the past few years through his presidency of the Beatrice M. H. Young Foundation and his own personal generosity. After attending Notre Dame Douglas Ho served in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded medals for valor as a captain of an artillery unit on infamous Hamburger Hill. Eventually Mr. Ho’s career moved him to New York as a portfolio manager and analyst in precious medals. Today, back in Hawaii, he is semi-retired from his past workings with banks and trust companies in estate planning, and finding his greatest pleasure giving back to the community.
